Area Boards are established in the Lanterman Act to protect the rights and advocate for persons with developmental disabilities. Area Board V provides systemic advocacy and monitoring, pubilc information, support for independent citizen organizations and conducts Life Quality Assessments.

Support for Families of Children with Disabilities (SFCD) is a parent-run, San Francisco-based non-profit organization serving families of children with any type of disability or special health care need. Support for Families provides parents and guardians with information about their child's disability and available resources and services, culturally and linguistically appropriate education on how to access services, and support from other families who have experienced similar challenges. SFCD also provides education and information to professionals and actively collaborates with other organizations to work toward a more coordinated, family-friendly network of services.
