INTRODUCTION
This page last updated: October 12, 2009

This Resource Guide has been developed to provide what we hope is a comprehensive list of agencies -- in the Bay Area, in California, and throughout the country -- which provide services to San Francisco children with disabilities and their families.

The Guide includes:

Table of Contents:

An itemized list of the 2009 Resource Guide contents in order of appearance.
Introduction: A list of family resource centers and parent and training information centers in San Francisco and the Bay Area.
Section 1:    A listing of the major government agencies that are mandated by law to provide services to children with disabilities and their families.
Section 2:    A listing of local and state resources, organized by service category.
Section 3:  An alphabetical listing of national resources.
Section 4:   A listing of internet web-sites that provide information and links to information on topics that concern families of children with disabilities.
Section 5:   An alphabetical index of all agencies mentioned in this guide.

We do not include individual practitioners in this guide. For information about how to locate a physician, mental health professional, assessment professional, tutor, or other practitioner, please call Support for Families at Open Gate at (415) 920-5040.

Our focus is on organizations and agencies that serve families in San Francisco. For information about similar agencies in other counties, refer to the family resource center in that area. For information about your local family resource center, see our listing in this Introduction or call Support for Families at Open Gate at (415) 920-5040.

This guide does not endorse any services or programs listed; nor is it an exhaustive listing of agencies. If you find any of the information is incorrect, if you would like to offer feedback, or if you know of additional resources that may be helpful to include in the future, please contact us at:

Parent Organizations
There are many parent organizations that offer education, parent-to-parent support and information to families of children with disabilities. Family resource centers (FRCs) are funded in this state by the Department of Developmental Disabilities to provide parent-to-parent support and information to families of children ages 0-5. Parent training and information centers (PTIs) are funded by the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation, to provide information and education to families of children who are eligible for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
